Catalog for the exhibition in the Vincent van GoghHuis from December 18, 2021 to July 3, 2022. With contributions by Norman Rosenthal and Ron Dirven

In the eighties Rainer Fetting (Wilhelmshaven, 1949) belonged to the ‘Neue Wilde’, a group of young German artists who ensured a reappraisal of figurative painting.

In his work he pays long lasting tribute to Vincent van Gogh, the father of modern painting. He painted it numerous times in expressive depictions near the Berlin Wall and in the New York City Subway. He placed the painter Paul Gauguin behind Vincent like a shadow. He called that scene ‘Ruckkehr der Giganten’. Van Gogh keeps returning to the work of Rainer Fetting. In this way he updates his significance for modern art and shows himself a worthy successor.
