From 30 applications, the following candidates were selected:

Period 1: August 17 – September 27, 2026
Cas van Deurssen

Period 2: October 5 – November 15, 2026
Heringa/Van Kalsbeek

Period 3: November 18 – December 30, 2026
Noortje de Brouwer

The selection was made by the Van Gogh AiR jury in consultation with partner Amuse, our Japanese Van Gogh AiR agent Yoriko Ishizawa, and the Dutch Embassy in Tokyo. The jury was positive about the quality of the submissions. The portfolios were of a high standard and the motivations well thought out, tailored to the special character of the location. The final choice was therefore not easy. In the final round, the focus was primarily on the expectation of shaping the residency in good relations with the local residents of Teshima. The first three residencies serve as a pilot for this new Van Gogh AiR program.

Teshima is an island in the Seto Inland Sea. Together with Naoshima, it is part of the group of art islands where the Setouchi Triennial takes place. A museum and various art projects by Christiaan Boltanski, Shinro Ohtake, and Tadanori Yooko, among others, have been realized on the island. The local population of Teshima is engaged in fishing and the cultivation of lemons and olives. The cultural development of the island is supported in part by Amuse, a Japanese company active in entertainment and cultural projects, which is making an old building of the fishing cooperative available to Van Gogh AiR. Downstairs is a large workspace that can also be used as an exhibition space. Upstairs is a spacious Japanese-style bedroom.

The Van Gogh AiR studio is located in the village of Kou at the harbor near the ‘Place for Sea Dreamers’. At this inspiring location, connections can be made with the local population and new artistic projects can be realized. Artists respond with a contemporary vision to the history of the place, customs, and crafts, in interaction with and respect for the community.

Vincent’s dream was to travel to Japan, but that was beyond his reach. In his thoughts, however, he was often there. He studied Japanese woodcuts, of which he collected hundreds, and in his letters to Theo, he philosophized extensively about the inspiration he drew from Japanese culture. As a painter, he preferred to compare himself to the way a Japanese farmer relates to nature. With the new studio, Van Gogh AiR aims to realize Vincent’s dream by establishing a place where Dutch artists can work (together) and connect with Japanese culture and artists.

This residency is offered as part of the International Cultural Policy, within which Japan is a focus country. The Dutch Embassy implements this policy in Japan with a focus on creating opportunities in Japan for artists from the Netherlands through artist-in-residence programs. The residencies on Teshima are organized by Van Gogh AiR Zundert. From all applications, the curators will select three artists or groups to travel to Japan in the second half of 2026.

The residency includes a fee of €2,000 (incl. travel and materials costs), a 6-week stay at the studio on Teshima in Japan, and guidance by the staff of Amuse (Teshima Factory) and the Japanese Van Gogh AiR agent Yoriko Ishizawa.

During the opening of the exhibition DUET – The Netherlands + Japan at the Van Gogh Gallery Breda on July 10, 2026, the winners of the Open Call for a residency on the Japanese island of Teshima were announced.
