The Vincent Show – Karina Beumer

February 4 to March 5, 2023

Karina Beumer worked in May and June 2022 in the guest studio of the Van GoghHuis at Landgoed de Moeren. Here she made a large number of drawings about Van Gogh as a media figure and character in the work of artists. On the occasion of the presentation of her book The Vincent Show, she is exhibiting a series of her drawings in the Van Gogh Room. Work will also be shown by artists who appear in her book, such as Carmen Schabracq, Ruud van Empel, Rainer Fetting, Loek Grootjans, Gert-Jan van den Bemd and Joey Sepers.

‘The character Vincent van Gogh has a prominent place in the media. Many actors and artists have attempted to impersonate Van Gogh or to dress up as him. This surprises and disturbs me at the same time. In an attempt to get a grip on this, I went to work like a printer, making drawings of moments from ‘At Eternity’s Gate’, ‘Dreams’, ‘Van Gogh’, ‘Vincent and Theo’ and ‘Lust for Life’ , but also, for example, by Carmen Schabracq in her work ‘self-portrait with Vincent’s pipe’ or make-up tutorials in which people paint themselves like Van Gogh. By drawing all these people you could say that I am doing to them what they did to Vincent, or… that I am one of many others who are making a cartoon about ‘The life of’, says Karina Beumer.
